🛑 High Court grants regular bail to Shailesh Kumar, the then Station House Officer (SHO) jailed in a bribery case

Shailesh Kumar, the then Station House Officer (SHO) of Chainpur Police Station in Gumla district—who was imprisoned in connection with a bribery case—has received significant relief from the Jharkhand High Court. Following a hearing, the court of Justice Anubha Rawat Choudhary granted him regular bail.

Advocate Anil Kumar Singh Maharana represented the petitioner. During the hearing, the defense informed the court that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) had completed its investigation and filed the charge sheet. The special ACB court has already taken cognizance of the matter. Shailesh Kumar had been in judicial custody since January 22, 2026. After his bail plea was rejected by the special ACB court in Ranchi, he had filed a petition for regular bail in the Jharkhand High Court on July 22, 2026.

Bribery allegation arose four days after taking charge

This case garnered attention partly because Shailesh Kumar faced allegations of soliciting a bribe just four days after assuming charge of the Chainpur Police Station.

Complainant Jaipal Nayak alleged that the then SHO, Ashok Kumar, had initially demanded a bribe of ₹20,000 to ₹30,000 in exchange for granting permission to set up a brick kiln for the construction of his private house. Subsequently, Shailesh Kumar—who took over the position—allegedly agreed to accept ₹20,000 following negotiations. The ACB took action based on this complaint.
