Medical Officer-in-Charge Attacked While Returning from Duty; Outrage Grips Medical Community
Ranchi/Palamu: Doctors and healthcare workers across the state are deeply outraged following an attack on Dr. Mithilesh Kumar, the Medical Officer-in-Charge of the Community Health Center (CHC) in Patan, while he was returning from duty on the night of May 28, 2026. Strongly condemning this incident, various medical organizations have demanded the swift arrest of the culprits and assurances regarding the safety of healthcare personnel.
According to reports, Dr. Mithilesh Kumar was intercepted on his way home from duty and brutally assaulted, sustaining severe injuries as a result. He is currently undergoing treatment at the RIMS Trauma Center in Ranchi.
In protest against the incident, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Jharkhand, the Jharkhand State Health Service Association (JSHSA), the Jharkhand Doctors Network (JDN), and various paramedical staff associations issued a joint statement declaring that this attack is not merely an assault on a single physician, but an attack on the entire healthcare system and the security framework of society at large.
The medical organizations have demanded that the state government and the administration conduct a high-level, impartial, and time-bound inquiry into the matter; immediately arrest the culprits and initiate strict legal action against them; and ensure the establishment of a permanent and effective security mechanism for doctors and healthcare workers. Additionally, they have demanded an immediate crackdown on criminal elements active in the region and an end to incidents of highway robbery.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, a delegation of doctors visited the RIMS Trauma Center to meet with the injured Dr. Mithilesh Kumar and inquire about his health condition. The delegation included Dr. Shambhu Prasad Singh, Dr. Abhishek Kumar Ramadhin, Dr. Mrityunjay Thakur, Dr. Vikas Kumar, and Dr. Deepak.
The delegation stated that a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the incident has already been lodged by Dr. Mithilesh Kumar's father. They urged the administration to take prompt action in the case and ensure the speedy arrest of the accused. Medical organizations have warned that if satisfactory action is not taken promptly, the entire medical fraternity—including the IMA, JSHSA, JDN, and paramedical staff associations—will consider taking all democratic and statutory measures, including a "pen-down" protest, to safeguard the safety and dignity of their members.
While wishing Dr. Mithilesh Kumar a speedy recovery, the medical community affirmed that the struggle to secure justice for him will continue.
