Ranchi: On the instructions of JHALSA, under the guidance of the Judicial Commissioner-cum-Chairman, an awareness program on de-addiction was organized for the students at Nirmala College, Ranchi under the 'Don Abhiyan'. Atul Gera of Life Savers, LADCS Deputy Chief, Rajesh Kumar Sinha and Anand of NCB, SI of CID, Rizwan Ansari, teachers of Nirmala College and others were present.

LADCS Advocate Rajesh Kumar Sinha said that Article 47 of the Indian Constitution directs the state to endeavour to eliminate the consumption of intoxicating drinks and narcotic drugs which are injurious to health, except for medicinal purposes. Production or possession of opium or poppy can be punished with rigorous imprisonment up to 20 years and a fine of Rs 2 lakh depending on the quantity under the NDPS Act 1985. Repeated offences can be punishable with death penalty. Along with rehabilitation centres in Kanke, NGOs also help in treating drug addicts. He further said that there is a legal aid clinic of District Legal Services Authority in CIP and Rinpas, where drug addicts are treated. District Legal Services Authority, Ranchi provides assistance in this. Mr. Sinha explained in detail about the substances related to drugs. He also told about the provision of punishment and told about those substances which if smuggled, kept or taken from one place to another and if found with any person, he will be liable for punishment under NDPS Act.

It should also be known that Mr. Rajesh Kumar Sinha also focused on NALSA Yojana - Saathi, Asha, Jagriti, said that people are being benefited by creating awareness on this through DALSA.

Addressing the program, Atul Gera told how drug addiction is hollowing out our country and it is very important to make students aware to avoid drug addiction. Drug peddlers easily use young men and students in this business, so we have to be alert and not fall prey to the temptation of any kind of drug peddlers.

NCB's Anand said that the role of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is important to stop this drug problem in Jharkhand. It is responsible for the implementation of laws and coordination between stakeholders. The production and distribution of drugs reaches the root of this problem. Most of the smuggling gangs are not caught due to lack of resources.

The Home Ministry has established Manas Helpline (toll free number 1933) for the general public to report any suspicion related to drug abuse last month.

Rizwan Ansari of CID provided information related to drug trafficking and told the students how to avoid children and young men being used in drug trafficking. He further said how things like ordinary cough syrup are used for intoxication. Jharkhand state not only consumes drugs but also produces them despite heavy action.

It is known that other speakers said that drug addiction has a negative impact on the individual and family, physical and mental health. For some people, the journey of addiction starts at the age of 16 or even less. The high population of rehabilitation centers has become a big problem for them. If the problem of drug addiction is controlled in Ranchi, the crime rate can be reduced by about 70 percent. He advised to report any suspicious activity related to drugs in Ranchi to the authorities.
