Drug Trafficking is a Serious Offense; Awareness is Key to Prevention: Rajesh Kumar Sinha
Ranchi: Under the directives of JHALSA and the guidance of DLSA, an awareness program on drug de-addiction was organized at Chotanagpur Law College on Saturday as part of the ‘DAWN’ campaign. During the event, experts informed students about the ill effects of drug abuse and the stringent laws associated with it.
Focus on Constitution and NDPS Act
Deputy LADC Rajesh Kumar Sinha emphasized Article 47 of the Indian Constitution, stating that it is the duty of the State to prohibit the consumption of intoxicating drugs. Highlighting the severity of the NDPS Act 1985, he noted that the production or trafficking of opium or poppy can lead to up to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of 2 lakh. For habitual offenders, the law even provides for the death penalty.
Link Between Crime and Substance Abuse
Officials from the CID and NCB also shared critical insights during the program:
* 70% Reduction in Crime: Speakers stated that if the drug problem in Ranchi is controlled, the crime rate could drop by approximately 70%.
* Targeting Youth: Atul Gera of 'Life Savers' warned that drug peddlers often lure students and young adults into this illegal trade through various temptations.
* MANAS Helpline: The NCB highlighted that the Ministry of Home Affairs has established the ‘MANAS’ helpline (Toll-Free No. 1933) for the public to report information related to narcotics.
Resources for Assistance
During the program, held in the presence of DLSA Secretary Rakesh Roshan, it was mentioned that Legal Aid Clinics are operational at CIP and RINPAS, where treatment and counseling are provided to individuals struggling with addiction. For any legal assistance, the NALSA toll-free number 15100 can also be contacted.
At the conclusion of the event, awareness pamphlets and leaflets were distributed among the students. The program saw participation from NCB and CID officials, college faculty, and a large number of students.
