World Wrestling Championships 2025: Anant Panghal wins bronze to give India its first medal

New Delhi : Anant Panghal secured India's first medal at the 2025 World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. The 21-year-old Anant Panghal defeated Swedish Olympian Emma Yona Malmgren 9-1 to win the bronze medal in the women's 53kg category on Thursday. This is her second World Championship medal of her career.

Anant took a 3-0 lead early in the match and, with strong defense in the second half, secured victory with a brilliant two-pointer and a stunning throw in the final moments. With this victory, Anant secured India's first medal of this edition.

In the women's category, however, Priyanka Malik (76kg) lost her bronze medal bout, losing 0-10 to Olympic medalist Milaimis Marin. Manisha Bhanwala was eliminated in the repechage round after losing 0-9 to Bulgaria's Bilyana Dudova.

On the other hand, India's Greco-Roman wrestlers continued their disappointing performance. All four wrestlers were eliminated without a win. Anil Mor (55 kg) had the worst performance, losing to world No. 1 Eldaniz Azizli of Azerbaijan in just 13 seconds.

Aman (77 kg) lost to Nao Kusaka of Japan by technical superiority, while Rahul (82 kg) lost 1-7 to Almir Tolebayev of Kazakhstan. In the 130 kg category, Sonu was defeated 8-0 by host Croatia's Marko Kocevic.
