Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav, while congratulating the people on the occasion, said that two wetlands from Bihar have been included in the Ramsar list. These include the Gokul Reservoir in Buxar district and the Udaipur Lake in West Champaran district. The inclusion of these two wetlands in the Ramsar list further strengthens the government's commitment to wetland conservation. This brings the total number of Ramsar sites to 93, with an area of 13,60,719 hectares.
He said that the inclusion of two wetlands from Bihar in the list of Ramsar sites reflects India's commitment to protecting its rich wetland ecosystems for biodiversity, climate change resilience, and sustainable livelihoods. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India continues to rank first in Asia and third globally in terms of the total number of Ramsar sites.
It is worth noting that the term Ramsar has two meanings: the Ramsar Convention is an international treaty aimed at conserving wetlands, and a Ramsar site is a wetland declared under this treaty to be of international importance, such as a site of importance for maintaining biodiversity.
