Jharkhand/Ranchi: Various tribal organizations in Jharkhand held a joint press conference in Ranchi on Monday to oppose the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Kurmi-Kudumi-Mahatto community. The organizations unanimously stated that including Kurmi-Kudumi-Mahatto in reservation would be detrimental to tribal society.
This demand for inclusion in ST is not only contrary to historical facts but also against the Constitution and the spirit of social justice.
On this occasion, DSPMU President Vivek Tirkey stated that any attempt to include this community in reservation would be detrimental to tribal society. He appealed to the administration to take this matter seriously and take legal action against the Kurmi-Kudumi leadership to maintain peace and order.
Ranchi University President Manoj Oraon said that if the Kurmi-Kurmi community considers itself tribal, they should pray that in their next life they are born from the womb of a tribal mother. Ashutosh Singh Chero, Palamau in-charge of the Tribal Students' Union, said that the confusion and anarchy being spread by the Kurmi-Kurmi community is a direct attack on tribal rights and privileges.
Advocate Devi Dayal Munda called the demand unconstitutional and called for its immediate withdrawal. Suraj Toppo, Executive President of the Tribal Moolvasi Manch, said that the Kurmi-Kurmi community sometimes claims to be descendants of Shivaji and sometimes of Luv-Kush, which clearly reflects the confusion regarding their identity. Gopal Singh Munda alleged that the Kurmi-Kurmi community is distorting the history of Raghunath Mahato.
Representatives from several organizations, including the Tribal Students' Union, Jharkhandi Tribal Protection Struggle Committee, and Tribal Moolvasi Manch, were present at the press conference.
