A New Lease on Life After Three Years: Successful Surgery for Complex Cervical Spinal Cord Tumor at Ranchi Sadar Hospital

Achieving a major milestone in the field of neurosurgery, Ranchi Sadar Hospital has given a new lease on life to a 57-year-old woman. Bindu Devi, a resident of Aurangabad, had been suffering from a complex tumor located within her cervical spinal cord for nearly three years; doctors successfully operated on her, offering hope for a return to a normal life.
Due to the tumor, Bindu Devi had lost almost all strength in both her arms, and her legs had gradually begun to fail as well. Her condition had become so severe that she had been bedridden for a long time.
Seeking better treatment, her family had consulted specialists at BHU in Varanasi, several major hospitals in Patna, and other reputed institutions. Despite spending approximately ₹7 to ₹8 lakh over three years, there was no lasting improvement in her condition. Even at AGPGI, surgery was deemed unfeasible due to the complex nature of the tumor.
Eventually, Bindu Devi was admitted to the Neurosurgery Department at Ranchi Sadar Hospital, where a team of specialists led by neurosurgeon Dr. Vikas decided to undertake the challenging surgery.
According to the doctors, the tumor was situated within the cervical spinal cord—a location where surgery carries a high risk of damaging the spinal cord itself. The team successfully performed the operation using state-of-the-art technology and expertise.
Within just two to three days of the surgery, strength began to gradually return to the patient's arms and legs. Currently, Bindu Devi is able to fully lift both her arms, and her condition is steadily improving. Her family described the outcome as receiving a "new life."
The anesthesia team played a crucial role in this successful operation, with contributions from Dr. Jyotika, as well as Ramij, Sohail, Sanju, Aman, and Poonam. Civil Surgeon Dr. Prabhat Kumar stated that the successful performance of such a complex neurosurgery at a government hospital is a major achievement for the healthcare system. This means critically ill patients will no longer need to travel to other states or large private hospitals for treatment.
