Approval granted for the release of 26 life convicts; open jails to be set up in all divisions: Chief Minister Hemant Soren

An important meeting of the Jharkhand State Sentence Review Board was held on Thursday at the Chief Minister's residential office on Kanke Road, presided over by Chief Minister Hemant Soren. During the meeting, cases concerning the release of 79 prisoners serving life sentences in various state jails were reviewed. After detailed deliberations, a consensus was reached to release 26 prisoners.
The Board also reviewed 37 new cases it had recommended and 42 cases that had been rejected in previous meetings. The Chief Minister approved the release of the 26 prisoners after thoroughly examining all aspects, including the prisoners' conduct, duration of imprisonment, legal provisions, and reports from the Superintendents of Police, Jail Superintendents, and Probation Officers of the respective districts.
The Chief Minister also directed officials to identify land and submit a proposal for establishing open jails in all divisions of the state. He stated that integrating individuals released from prison into the mainstream of society is a priority for the government, enabling them to lead dignified lives and play a positive role in society.
He further directed that a database be prepared for mentally ill inmates and those already released from prison, ensuring they receive the benefits of social security schemes. The Chief Minister remarked that the state government is working by giving equal importance to justice, human compassion, and a reformative approach.
Several senior officials were present at the meeting, including Chief Secretary Avinash Kumar, DGP Tadasha Mishra, Principal Secretary-cum-Legal Remembrancer Neeraj Kumar Srivastava, Inspector General (Prisons and Correctional Services) Sudarshan Prasad Mandal, and Judicial Commissioner Anil Kumar Mishra.
