True Meaning of Jihad in Islam: A Message of Justice, Equality and Humanity

Ranchi. All India Muslim Majlis-e-Ulema National President Hazrat Maulana Mufti Abdullah Azhar Qasmi on Tuesday issued a press statement emphasizing that the word “Jihad” is being misrepresented in the media. He said that the true meaning of Jihad in Islam is struggle, self-improvement, and establishing justice in society, not violence or extremism.

The Real Concept of Jihad

Maulana Qasmi explained that Islam defines Jihad at three major levels:

1. Inner struggle for self-purification

Controlling desires, improving one’s soul, and leading a righteous life.

2. Building a clean, stable and moral society

Promoting ethical values and resisting social evils.

3. Establishing justice and fairness

Protecting the rights of the weak and prioritizing truth and equality.

He clarified that sacrificing one’s life or harming others is not the meaning of Jihad. Associating violence with Jihad is completely against Islamic teachings.

Violence and Oppression Are Forbidden in Islam

According to the Qur’an and Hadith, Maulana Qasmi noted:

Attacking women, children, or elderly people is strictly prohibited

Oppressing or intimidating any human being is forbidden

Even during war, destruction of cities, villages, farms, forests or animals is not allowed

He stressed that groups who misuse the term Jihad to justify violence are promoting a distorted ideology that has nothing to do with Islam.

Islam’s Core Message—Peace, Equality and Human Dignity

He said that Islam stands for:

The establishment of justice and fairness

Restoration of rights of weaker sections

Equality among followers of all religions

Promotion of humanity, compassion and peaceful coexistence

He urged people to read the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to understand the true essence of Islam and to strengthen harmony and love in society.

Quote

“Revive the lessons of truth, justice and courage

For leadership of the world, these virtues will be required from you.”
