Himachal Pradesh/Shimla: The havoc of monsoon rain in Himachal Pradesh is not stopping. Heavy rain was recorded in some places of the state from last night to Sunday morning. Dharamshala of Kangra district recorded the highest rainfall of 232 mm. Palampur recorded 126 mm, Murari Devi area of Mandi district recorded 79 mm and Sundarnagar and Jogindernagar recorded 77 mm rainfall. The capital Shimla also received heavy rain at night and clouds have been camping since morning. Due to continuous rain, rivers and streams are in spate and incidents of landslides are increasing.
The Meteorological Department has also issued a yellow alert regarding heavy rain in seven districts Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur on Sunday. The department has warned that there is a possibility of thunderstorms and lightning along with heavy rains in these districts. However, from 15 to 20 September, the pace of monsoon is expected to slow down and light to moderate rainfall is expected in most parts of the state.
Heavy rains and landslides have disrupted life. Haripurdhar-Solan road in Sirmaur district has been blocked due to heavy landslides. At the same time, a part of the Pathankot-Chamba National Highway collapsed at a place called Valley under Dalhousie police station area of Chamba district. During this, a truck and two bikes fell down, although luckily there was no loss of life. The movement of vehicles has been affected due to the collapse of the road and the administration teams are engaged in relief and restoration work on the spot.
According to the State Emergency Operation Center, as of Sunday morning, three national highways and a total of 647 roads in the state have been closed for traffic. Of these, NH-03 and NH-305 and 170 roads are blocked in Kullu district. 246 roads are closed in Mandi, 58 in Shimla, 45 in Kangra, 38 in Chamba, 24 in Sirmaur, 13 in Bilaspur and NH-503A and 22 roads are closed in Una district. Apart from this, 185 transformers and 343 drinking water schemes have also come to a standstill in the state. The maximum 93 transformers have been affected in Kullu district, 64 in Mandi and 24 in Chamba. The maximum drinking water schemes have come to a standstill, 176 in Kangra, 61 in Shimla and 53 in Mandi.
This monsoon devastation has deeply wounded Himachal. According to preliminary reports, 394 people have died so far, 455 people have been injured and 41 people are reported missing. In district-wise figures, the maximum 61 deaths have occurred in Mandi. 55 people have died in Kangra, 45 in Chamba, 44 in Kullu, 42 in Shimla, 29 each in Kinnaur and Solan, 25 in Una, 20 in Sirmaur, 19 in Bilaspur, 16 in Hamirpur and 9 in Lahaul-Spiti.
So far, 1,403 houses have been completely destroyed while 5,952 houses have been partially damaged due to heavy rains and disaster. 484 shops and 5,929 cow sheds have also collapsed. Livestock has also suffered heavy losses, with 2,086 animals and more than 26 thousand poultry birds dying.
According to the state government, public property has suffered a loss of more than Rs 4,467 crore so far this monsoon season. The Public Works Department has suffered the most damage due to the collapse of roads and bridges. So far, 140 landslides, 97 flash floods and 46 cloudbursts have been reported across the state.
Meanwhile, many ministers of the central government are on tour these days to take stock of the disaster situation in the state. They are inspecting the damage caused by the disaster and relief work by visiting Chamba, Mandi and Kullu districts. At the same time, the state government and administration have appealed to the people to remain alert. They have been especially asked to stay away from rivers, streams and slopes.
