Security tightened on India-Nepal border after situation worsens in neighboring country, trucks and tourists stranded

West Bengal/Kolkata: Security has been tightened on the India-Nepal border in West Bengal after 19 people died and many were injured in the ongoing 'Generation-Z movement' in the Himalayan country Nepal. Due to the situation, about 100 Indian truck drivers and tourists are stranded on the border.

The Darjeeling District Police has set up a 24-hour control room to help the stranded Indians. Darjeeling Superintendent of Police Praveen Prakash said in a statement issued on Tuesday night that we have started house-to-house search in the border area. There is no news of unrest on this side, but we are alert. There is constant contact with the Nepal Police and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is also on alert. Any Indian is appealed to contact the Darjeeling District Police Helpline in case of any problem in Nepal.

Although there has been no official announcement, traffic has been completely stopped at the Panitanki border near Siliguri. The central and state governments are jointly taking measures to increase surveillance in border areas and avoid security lapses.

There is an atmosphere of tension in the border area. The markets and shops of Panitanki are closed. On the other side, on Tuesday, protesters across the Nepal border burnt tyres, killing two people.

According to sources, security has been doubled at the border and additional troops have been deployed. The Defense Ministry has issued a 'high alert'. Every vehicle across the border is being thoroughly checked and dog squads are also deployed. The police is preparing a record of the name and address of the driver and passengers of every vehicle.

Meanwhile, hundreds of trucks are stuck on both sides due to the closure of the border. While the situation is becoming serious, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned and left the country.
