Jharkhand/Ranchi: On the occasion of World Rabies Day, the Veterinary College conducted free health check-ups for 66 pets and vaccinated 62 against rabies on Saturday.
Animal lovers from various parts of the capital brought their dogs, cats, rabbits, and goats for the check-ups.
Opening the event, Dr. SC Dubey, Vice-Chancellor of Birsa Agricultural University, and Dr. MK Gupta, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, said that rabies can be fatal, so caution and awareness are essential to prevent it.
Dr. Abhishek Kumar, coordinator of the event and Head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Complex, said that a poster exhibition was organized to raise awareness about the ill effects of rabies and preventive measures.
College faculty also provided technical information on rabies prevention to visiting animal lovers. The program also received significant support from pharmaceutical companies Mankind, Drools, Veco, MSD, and Indian Herbs.
Numerous Competitions Organized
Hundreds of students participated in the awareness program and various competitions. Winners included: Elocution Competition: Angel Kerketta first, Rahul Prasad second, and Sharon Nistar Barla third; Poster Competition: Sharon Nistar Barla first, Angel Kerketta second, and Asmita Singh third; Audio-Visual Competition: Saurabh Jaiswal first, Aditi and Nikhil second, and Angel Kerketta third; Placard Competition: Aditi first, Nikhil second, and Vishal Kumar Singh third.
In the street play competition, the second-year group of students won first place, and the first-year team won second place.
The main symptoms of rabies after being bitten by a pet or street animal include aggressive or irritable behavior, dizziness, vomiting, fatigue, fever or loss of appetite, hydrophobia, muscle spasms, stiff neck, anxiety, seizures, and difficulty swallowing.
