JMM raises questions over Sonam Wangchuk's arrest

Jharkhand/Ranchi: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Central General Secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya has criticized the arrest of Ladakhi academic Sonam Wangchuk. During a press conference at the JMM camp office on Saturday, he stated that Chief Minister Hemant Soren had expressed apprehensions about something untoward happening to Wangchuk during the last assembly session. Supriyo stated that Wangchuk's arrest was made at the behest of large corporate houses like Adani and Ambani.

He stated that Sonam Wangchuk has received over 30 international honors in the field of education and that his innovations have benefited the Indian Army. He recalled that Wangchuk invented a special solar tent for soldiers, which was adopted by the DRDO. He alleged that the central government is suppressing public movements in Ladakh with the intention of allowing corporates to take over natural resources like solar energy and lithium reserves.

He said that the BJP had promised to grant Ladakh full statehood under the Sixth Schedule during the 2020 elections, but that promise has now been forgotten. Instead, the region has been made a Union Territory, suppressing public demands. Bhattacharya alleged that efforts are underway to hand over Ladakh's strategic and natural resources to corporate interests, and that Sonam Wangchuk's arrest is part of that conspiracy.
