Homeopathy in India: A Confluence of Tradition, Research, and Modern Healthcare
The system of homeopathic medicine in India is currently undergoing rapid development. It is no longer confined merely to traditional forms of treatment; rather, supported by scientific research, modern technology, and government initiatives, it is emerging as a robust healthcare alternative. Continuous efforts within the AYUSH sector have endowed homeopathy with a renewed identity and enhanced credibility.

Under the Extramural Research (EMR) scheme, financial assistance of up to ₹70 lakhs is provided over a period of 2 to 3 years, thereby fostering research in clinical, pharmaceutical, and public health domains. By placing a special emphasis on epidemics and chronic diseases, this scheme is unlocking new possibilities within the healthcare sector.
On the other hand, the AYUSH Oushadhi Gunvatta Evam Utpadan Samvardhan Yojana (AOGUSY)—the Scheme for Quality and Production Promotion of AYUSH Medicines—has been implemented to bolster the quality and production of medicines. Through this scheme, pharmaceutical manufacturers receive assistance in acquiring modern equipment, undertaking technological upgrades, and aligning their production processes with WHO-GMP standards. Additionally, financial support is extended to testing laboratories and pharmacy institutions to ensure the quality and safety of the medicines produced.
India's rich biodiversity of medicinal plants also serves as a fundamental pillar of homeopathy's strength. The country is home to over 7,000 species of medicinal plants, and special initiatives are being undertaken for their cultivation and conservation. This not only ensures the availability of high-quality raw materials but also boosts farmers' incomes and generates employment opportunities.
Furthermore, Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) programs are being extensively utilized to raise public awareness. Through health campaigns, seminars, and community engagement programs, people are being informed about the benefits of homeopathy. Simultaneously, through international collaborations, scholarship programs, and expert exchange initiatives, India is further solidifying its global standing in this field. During the pandemic, homeopathy has demonstrated its utility as a complementary system of medicine. The Central Council for Research in Homeopathy has advanced research and treatment initiatives related to the pandemic through its various institutions across the country. Positive results have been observed with the use of homeopathic medicines in treating diseases such as Japanese Encephalitis, Chikungunya, Dengue, and COVID-19.
Ultimately, homeopathy in India is emerging as a successful confluence of tradition and modern science. The active role played by institutions such as the National Commission for Homeopathy is rendering this system even more organized and credible.
