The Ministry of Steel said on Tuesday that these warships were inaugurated by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. SAIL, operating under the Ministry of Steel, has continued its important partnership with the country's defense sector by supplying about 8,000 tonnes of critical-grade steel for the Indian Navy's 2 advanced frontline warships, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri.
The ministry said that both these frigates were inducted into the Indian Navy during a ceremony held in Visakhapatnam chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. SAIL has played a vital role in the construction of both these advanced warships of the Indian Navy.
The public sector company, in partnership with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), supplied critical grade hot-rolled sheets and plates from its Bokaro, Bhilai and Rourkela steel plants. Through the development and supply of critical-grade steel for the Indian Navy, SAIL has made a significant contribution towards import substitution and self-reliance in the defence sector.
The Steel Ministry said this is directly linked to the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' initiatives to reduce India's dependence on imports towards providing special quality steel for defence needs. Rourkela Steel Plant’s ‘Special Plate Plant’ alone has supplied over one lakh tonnes of critical-grade steel for defence applications such as tanks, warships and missiles.
SAIL’s enduring partnership with the country’s defence sector is well established, with a proud history of supplying critical-grade steel for iconic ships such as INS Vikrant, INS Nilgiri, INS Ajay, INS Nistar, INS Arnala, INS Vindhyagiri and INS Surat.
