Ranchi: Cafford House is the Chief Minister's residence of Jharkhand. The foundation of this residence was laid in 1853 by Commissioner Alien, the principal agent of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal of the British government. Later Cafford completed this residence and it was named Cafford House. After the formation of Jharkhand, it got the status of Chief Minister's residence and this building remained a witness to the top post of power in the state for about two and a half decades. Cafford Bhawan built by the British and many myths related to it are now going to become a part of the past.
The Chief Minister's residence located on Kanke Road is a symbol of slavery of the British. To remove the symbol of slavery and to establish Jharkhandi identity, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, along with his wife Kalpana Soren, laid the foundation stone of the new Chief Minister's residence on the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima. Modern facilities and technologies will be used in this building. There will be large conference halls and video conferencing rooms in which the Chief Minister will be able to hold meetings. There will be proper arrangements for parking and there will be gardens for greenery. The residence will have the facility of a helipad so that the Chief Minister will be able to reach any place in a short time.
The myth of Cafford House
The first Chief Minister of Jharkhand Babulal Marandi started using the Cafford Bhawan built by the British as the Chief Minister's residence. Later Chief Minister Arjun Munda got it renovated and made many changes from the security point of view. Many myths are prevalent about Cafford House. After Jharkhand was separated from Bihar, many Chief Ministers were appointed, but no one could complete his term. It is believed that any Chief Minister who lived in Cafford House, which is currently the Chief Minister's residence, did not complete his term, which includes Babulal Marandi, Arjun Munda, Shibu Soren and Madhu Koda. Due to this myth, many Chief Ministers have avoided living in this residence.
Hemant Soren had decided not to live in this residence when he became the Chief Minister for the first time in 2013. Now he has laid the foundation stone of the new Chief Minister's residence. At the same time, Raghuvar Das became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand in 2014 and he tried to break the myth of Cafford House. He had said at that time that he did not believe in all these things, yet he had made some Vaastu changes in this residence. Raghuvar Das did complete his term, but instead of coming and going from the Kanke Road gate, he used the Morhabadi gate.
