Sarhul, Symbolizing the Union of Mother Earth and the Sun God, to be Celebrated on March 21: Sanjay Saraf

Ranchi: Sanjay Saraf—Vice President of Hindi Sahitya Bharati and Provincial Spokesperson for the Jharkhand Parents Association—stated that Sarhul is an immensely significant and sacred festival of the tribal community, serving as a vibrant symbol of nature, faith, culture, and social unity. He explained that, according to tradition, this festival symbolizes the union of Mother Earth (*Dharti Mata*) and the Sun God (*Surya Dev*), an event believed to have led to the creation of the universe.

Sanjay Saraf noted that Sarhul is celebrated on the *Tritiya* (third day) of the *Chaitra Shukla Paksha* (bright fortnight of the month of Chaitra) and, this year, will be celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm across all of Jharkhand as well as in neighboring regions on March 21. This festival marks the advent of the spring season, a time when new blossoms appear on the *Sakhua* (Sal) trees and nature conveys a message of renewed life.

He further explained that on this auspicious occasion, the priests of the tribal community—known as *Pahans*—visit the village's *Sarna* site to perform special rituals and worship using the flowers of the Sal tree. During the worship, prayers are offered for rainfall, a bountiful harvest, and the overall happiness and prosperity of the community. Following the rituals, the Sal flowers and holy water (*Prasad*) are distributed among the villagers.

Subsequently, traditional dances, folk songs, and community feasts are organized in the villages, with both men and women participating enthusiastically while clad in their traditional attire. An atmosphere of festivity and jubilation permeates the entire region.

Sanjay Saraf emphasized that Sarhul is not merely a religious festival but a celebration that conveys a powerful message regarding environmental conservation. The tribal community firmly believes that water, forests, and land (*Jal, Jangal, aur Zameen*) constitute the very foundation of life; therefore, their preservation is deemed absolutely essential. This festival serves as an inspiration to maintain a harmonious balance between humanity and nature.

He added that Sarhul also stands as a symbol of social unity and brotherhood, bringing people together to worship collectively and to keep their cultural traditions alive. In the contemporary era—at a time when environmental crises are on the rise—festivals like Sarhul serve to remind us of the importance of establishing harmony with nature and taking steps to protect it. This is the greatest characteristic of this festival, as well as its relevance in the present times.
