Severe Water Crisis in Tehran: President Warns the Capital May Need to Be Evacuated

Iran/Tehran (M Bharat 24 News Live): Iran’s capital, Tehran, is facing a serious water crisis due to prolonged drought conditions. President Masoud Pezeshkian has issued a grave warning that if rainfall does not occur soon, the situation could become so critical that the city may have to be evacuated.

According to media reports, during his visit to the western city of Sanandaj on Thursday, President Pezeshkian said that the government is struggling to deal simultaneously with economic, environmental, and social challenges. He revealed that the main reservoirs supplying water to Tehran have only about two weeks of water remaining.

Calling the ongoing drought one of Iran’s most severe natural challenges, Pezeshkian cautioned that if it continues, water distribution in Tehran may have to be restricted as early as next month.

“If this drought continues,” he warned, “we will run out of water, and evacuating the city may become necessary.”

The president emphasized the urgent need for better management and conservation of the nation’s water and energy resources, describing the current situation as “deeply concerning.”

Tehran’s water supply depends primarily on five major dams — Lar, Mamloo, Amir Kabir, Taleghan, and Latian — with Amir Kabir being the largest. The Tehran Water Authority had already warned in July that the city’s water reserves had reached their lowest level in a century.

Last week, the head of the authority, Behzad Parsa, reiterated that if dry weather persists, the remaining water in the dams would be sufficient for only two more weeks of supply to the city.

Officials have urged citizens to conserve water and use it judiciously to help mitigate the worsening crisis.
