Woman Attacked on Witchcraft Allegation, NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance
Garhwa, August 27, 2026: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a case in which a woman was allegedly attacked and suffered around 40 percent burns after being branded a witch in Bhojpur village of Garhwa district, Jharkhand. According to a media report, the attacker allegedly poured boiling water on the victim.
The Commission said that if the information published in the media is correct, the incident amounts to a serious violation of human rights. The NHRC has issued notices to the Garhwa District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police in connection with the matter.
The Commission has sought a detailed report from both officials within two weeks. The report has also been asked to include details of the victim’s present health condition and the compensation provided to her, if any.
According to a media report published on August 24, 2026, the injured woman was admitted to a hospital for treatment. The investigation into the matter is underway.
