India-Russia Strengthen Cooperation on Snow Leopard Conservation

Moscow, August 26, 2026: A Russia-India roundtable conference on the study and conservation of snow leopards was held in Moscow to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. The conference took place at the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The meeting was organized under the partnership agreement signed in December 2025 between the Interregional Association “Irbis” and the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA). The initiative aims to strengthen international cooperation in snow leopard research, monitoring and conservation.

A delegation from India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change shared the country’s progress in science-based snow leopard conservation efforts. Officials from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) highlighted advances in population assessment, radio telemetry and genetic analysis.

Representatives from Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the A.N. Severtsov Institute, Moscow Zoo, Rosprirodnadzor and leading snow leopard experts also participated in the conference.

The Indian delegation took part in the roundtable and thematic discussions, focusing on scientific cooperation, knowledge sharing and coordinated approaches for the long-term conservation of the snow leopard.
