Jan Dhan Yojana Transforms Financial Inclusion Landscape; Significant Rise in Accounts and Deposits
New Delhi, August 27, 2026: The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has played a pivotal role in giving a new direction to financial inclusion in the country. The scheme has not only integrated the unbanked and vulnerable sections into the formal banking system but has also fostered a habit of saving. A remarkable increase in the number of Jan Dhan accounts has been recorded over the past 12 years.
Average Deposit of ₹5,356 Per Account as of August 19
As of August 19, 2026, the average deposit amount per account under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has reached ₹5,356. According to available data, the average deposit per Jan Dhan account has increased approximately 3.4 times between August 2015 and August 2026.
This rise in average deposits indicates that Jan Dhan accounts have not remained limited merely to providing banking access; account holders are actively using them for savings and other financial needs. This signals a strengthening trend of regular saving among the people.
2.3-Fold Increase in the Number of Accounts
There has also been a substantial rise in the number of accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana over the last 12 years. During this period, the number of Jan Dhan accounts has grown approximately 2.3 times. This demonstrates the scheme's crucial role in extending banking services to those who were previously excluded from the formal financial system.
Through the Jan Dhan Yojana, people have gained access to bank accounts, savings facilities, and digital financial services. Furthermore, these accounts have played a vital role in the direct transfer of benefits from government schemes.
41.29 Crore RuPay Cards Issued
A large number of RuPay cards have been issued to integrate Jan Dhan account holders into the digital payment ecosystem. As of August 19, 2026, 41.29 crore RuPay cards have been issued to PMJDY account holders. Over time, both the number of RuPay cards and their usage have increased. This has fostered digital transactions and the utilization of banking services among Jan Dhan account holders.
Digital Technology Simplifies Banking
Digital public infrastructure has played a pivotal role in the success of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. Technologies such as Aadhaar-based biometric authentication have helped extend banking services to a wider population.
According to the government, key factors behind the scheme's success include a mission-oriented approach, regulatory support, public-private sector participation, and the integration of digital technology. These efforts have significantly advanced financial inclusion on a large scale.
A Path from Savings to Credit Access
For Jan Dhan account holders, integration into the banking system has expanded the scope of available financial services. The growing trend of savings in these accounts can pave the way for future access to various credit facilities.
Account holders may become eligible for various credit options, including Mudra loans. These facilities create opportunities to secure financial assistance for small businesses, self-employment, and income-generating activities.
A Key Driver of Inclusive Growth
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is now entering its 13th year. Throughout this period, the scheme has not only strengthened financial inclusion but also accelerated digital banking and economic empowerment.
The overarching objective of the Jan Dhan Yojana is to integrate every segment of society into the formal financial system and enhance access to economic opportunities. The rise in the number of accounts, the increase in average deposit balances, and the issuance of millions of RuPay cards reflect the progress made in this direction.
