Maharashtra/Nashik(H.S): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has busted two fake call centers in Nashik and arrested two people in the case of cyber fraud.
The accused arrested by the CBI have been identified as Ganesh and Shyam Kamankar. Both were produced in the special CBI court, Thane on September 13, from where they were sent on police remand till September 15.
The spokesperson said that the arrested accused operated these call centers in the name of M/s Swagan Business Solutions Private Limited. From here, UK citizens were called posing as insurance agents and government officials and they were cheated in the name of fake insurance policies.
According to the spokesperson, about 60 people were working in these call centers. They used Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), spoofed numbers (a phone number that has been changed on the caller ID to hide the real identity of the person calling) and fake documents to obtain credit/debit card details from victims and extort money.
The CBI had registered a case against four people and unidentified public servants on September 11. Subsequently, during searches in Nashik and Kalyan (Thane), digital evidence, data of victims, fake insurance scripts, eight mobile phones, eight computers and Rs 5 lakh in cash were recovered. The proceeds of crime were routed through PayPal and bank accounts.
The entire case is under investigation by the CBI.
