Shortage of Small Denomination Notes and Coins Causing Difficulties for Traders Ahead of Deepawali and Chhath; Chamber Urges RBI and Banks to Ensure Adequate Supply

Ranchi, October 31, 2026: Taking serious note of complaints from traders regarding the shortage of new currency notes and coins in banks across Jharkhand during the festive season, the Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FJCCI) has taken up the matter with the concerned authorities. The Chamber has written to the RBI AGM, Regional Director, SLBC General Manager, and General Managers and Deputy General Managers of various banks, urging them to ensure an adequate supply of new currency notes and coins.

Jharkhand Chamber President Tulsi Patel said that banks across the state are currently facing a severe shortage of new currency notes of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50 and Rs 100 denominations, along with Rs 5 and Rs 10 coins. This shortage is creating difficulties for traders in carrying out daily transactions. Complaints are being received from all districts of Jharkhand, including Ranchi, with the situation being particularly serious in rural areas.

He pointed out that Deepawali and Chhath are festivals deeply rooted in Indian traditions and faith. There is a longstanding tradition of using new currency notes during worship and gifting money to children and loved ones as a token of good fortune. He urged banks to distribute new notes and coins to customers through their branches and organise coin fairs at various locations across the state.

Banking Sub-Committee Chairman Mahendra Jain said that ensuring an adequate supply of new currency notes and coins during the festive season is essential to prevent unnecessary difficulties for traders and the general public. He added that the Jharkhand Chamber is committed to extending all possible support to banks in organising coin fairs across the state.
