PM Modi Highlights India’s Commitment to Elephant Conservation on World Elephant Day
New Delhi, August 12, 2026: On the occasion of World Elephant Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s commitment to protecting elephants and preserving the country’s rich natural heritage.
The Prime Minister said elephants are an important part of India’s biodiversity and environmental heritage. India is home to a significant share of the world’s wild Asian elephant population, and dedicated efforts are being undertaken across the country for their conservation.
India currently has 33 Elephant Reserves, which play an important role in protecting elephant habitats, facilitating their safe movement and addressing human-elephant conflict.
PM Modi also appreciated the contribution of forest personnel, scientists, veterinarians, mahouts and local communities involved in elephant conservation.
He emphasized that protecting elephants is not merely about conserving a single wildlife species, but also about safeguarding India’s natural heritage for future generations.
The government is also focusing on the protection of elephant corridors and natural habitats to facilitate the safe movement of elephants and promote a better balance between humans and wildlife.
