Registered Letter Service Discontinued, Registration Option Available in Speed Post

Jharkhand/Ranchi: The Indian Postal Department's 171-year-old Registered Letter Service is now history. It ceased operations on September 30, 2025. Starting Wednesday, the option of Registered Letter Service will be available as a registration option in Speed Post. Senior Chief Postmaster, Ranchi GPO, Diwakar Prasad, provided this information. He stated that Registered Letter Service has been a glorious chapter of Indian Post, but now its modern form, Speed Post, will provide faster and safer service.

Meanwhile, Philately Bureau Incharge Sandeep Kumar Mahato stated that the last day registered letter sent on September 30 will forever keep the memory of this historic change alive. The Indian Postal Department has appealed to the public to maximize the use of Speed Post service under the new system and take advantage of modern postal services.

With this change, the Postal Department has also implemented new rates. Local documents weighing up to 50 grams will now be charged ₹22.42 (including GST). Rates are divided into categories based on distance: 200, 500, 1000, and over 2000 kilometers.

According to information, this service, which began in 1854, distinguished itself by providing secure and reliable communication to millions of citizens. Now, it has been completely replaced by the Speed Post service.

To commemorate this historic occasion, the Ranchi Head Post Office prepared a special Last Day Registered Letter and sent it to philatelists and postal enthusiasts across the country, which is considered a collectible treasure. Starting October 1st, all registrations will now be processed exclusively through Speed Post. The new system will provide customers with modern conveniences, including OTP-based delivery, Proof of Delivery (POD), insurance, and compensation. Furthermore, faster and more secure online tracking will be available.
