Lok Sabha Speaker to Lead Indian Delegation to Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference

 

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will lead the Indian parliamentary delegation to the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, to be held in Bridgetown, Barbados, from October 5 to 12. Thirty-six Speakers and 16 Secretaries of Legislative Assemblies from India's 24 states and union territories will also participate in the conference.

According to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the Speaker will address the General Assembly on the theme "Commonwealth: A Global Partnership." The delegation, led by Om Birla, includes Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, MPs Anurag Sharma, Dr. D. Purandeswari, Dr. K. Sudhakar, Rekha Sharma, Dr. Ajit Madhavrao Gopchade, Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh, and Rajya Sabha Secretary General P.C. Modi.

Seven thematic workshops will be held during the conference. Om Birla will chair a workshop on "Harnessing Technology: Promoting Democracy and Bridging the Digital Divide through Digital Transformation."

MP Anurag Sharma is the Treasurer of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). He will participate in the Executive Committee meeting held during the conference. Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary will also join the committee as the regional representative from the Indian region.

Dr. D. Purandeswari will participate in the "Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Steering Committee" meeting and will present as a panelist in the session on "Best Practices and Strategies for Realizing the Vision of Women-Sensitive Parliaments in the Commonwealth." Other members will participate in various workshops and the General Assembly.

During the conference, Om Birla will hold bilateral talks with his counterparts from Commonwealth countries and discuss parliamentary cooperation. He also plans to meet the leadership of Barbados and interact with the Indian community during his stay in Barbados.

It is noteworthy that the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference is a meeting of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Steering Committee, a meeting of member countries. It is a leading global forum for strengthening democratic ideals, parliamentary traditions and technical cooperation among parliaments.
