High Court bans unauthorized use of Abhishek Bachchan's personal things

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has banned the unauthorized use of film actor Abhishek Bachchan's name, voice and pictures along with his personal things. Justice Tejas Karia's bench said that the use of any symbol related to the personality of any person is a violation of his right to privacy and it also affects his right to live with dignity.

During the hearing on Friday, the High Court directed to remove the related URL (weblink) that was using anything related to Abhishek Bachchan's personality without permission. The court said that by misusing his name and image using technology like AI and deepfake, not only financial damage is being caused but his reputation, dignity and goodwill are also being harmed.

The court had reserved the decision on September 10. During the hearing, advocates Praveen Anand and Dhruv Anand, appearing on behalf of Abhishek Bachchan, had said that people are using the petitioner's picture and his likes and dislikes. People are also using Abhishek Bachchan for commercial purposes. Even using technology like AI and deepfake, indecent content is being uploaded on YouTube channels, Instagram accounts and Facebook profiles with photos, videos and other celebrities. During the hearing, lawyer Mamta Rani, appearing on behalf of Google, had said that their platform would remove such URLs after the court's order.

Earlier, the High Court had banned the use of symbols and content related to the personality of Abhishek Bachchan's wife and actress Aishwarya Rai without permission. Aishwarya Rai's petition said that a firm called Aishwarya Nation Wealth uses Aishwarya Rai's picture as chairperson in its letterhead. Whereas Aishwarya Rai has no prior knowledge about this. Doing so is completely fraudulent. The petition mentioned the websites and apps that have been found using her name.
