Floods wreak havoc in Pakistan's Punjab, Sikh pilgrimage site Kartarpur submerged, two dams broken


Islamabad (Pakistan): All major rivers in Pakistan's Punjab province are flowing above the danger mark due to monsoon rains. Floods have created havoc in the entire province. Floods in the Ravi, Chenab and Sutlej rivers have caused havoc. Hundreds of villages are submerged. Crops were destroyed and cattle were swept away. Kartarpur in the flood-affected Narowal district is almost submerged. The Kartarpur corridor is already submerged. The Kartarpur Gurdwara Darbar Sahib complex, the largest pilgrimage site of the Sikh community around the world, has been submerged for the last 24 hours. The army has taken charge in eight districts of the province.

According to the news of Pakistan's Urdu newspaper Daily Jang, seven people have died in this disaster in Gujranwala division. Torrential rains have created an emergency situation in Sialkot. So far 210,000 people have been evacuated to safer places in the province. Thousands of tents have been set up for the affected people to stay at high places. Help is being announced continuously from mosques.

To save Head Qadirabad, two dams built on the Chenab river have been broken. One of these is Mandi Bahauddin and the other is the dam of Alipur Chattha in Gujranwala district. The army has started relief and rescue operations along with the district administration in the eight districts badly affected by the floods. Elders say that after 38 years, such a fierce form of the Ravi river has been seen. According to Irfan Ali Kathia, DG of Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the next 48 hours are very critical for Ravi and Chenab. Residents living on the banks of Chenab river from Qadirabad to Pindi Bhattian have been urged to vacate the place as soon as possible.

According to Daily Jang, the water of the Ravi river in Narowal has entered the Kartarpur corridor. There is a possibility of heavy damage to the religious place of Sikhs due to this. Gurdwara Sahib is seen submerged. Narowal Road is also flooded and Shakargarh Highway is also closed for traffic. There is a crack in the dam at Shakargarh Bheko Chak of Ravi River. 21 people trapped in water in Jarmian Jhanda area of ​​​​Shakargarh village have been rescued. The water level of Ravi is continuously rising. In view of the situation, the Civil Defense has issued an alert and sounded the siren. On the other hand, the Sutlej river is also in spate and the flow of water at Ganda Singh Head has been recorded at 245,000 cusecs.

The Kartarpur Corridor provides access to Indian Sikhs to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib located in Pakistan. It was opened in November 2019 ahead of the 550th Prakash Parv of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites of the Sikh community. Kartarpur was founded by Guru Nanak Dev in 1504. He made his abode on the banks of the Ravi River.
