Thane, September 25, 2026: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has made several major announcements for Mathadi workers, assuring them that the Mathadi Act will not be scrapped under any circumstances and will continue to provide legal and social protection to workers.
Addressing a grand workers’ gathering at the Vashi APMC Market Yard on the 93rd birth anniversary of Mathadi movement founder and late MLA Annasaheb Patil, Fadnavis said the government is committed to protecting workers’ rights and ensuring them a dignified life.
The Chief Minister announced that around 2,850 to 3,000 Mathadi workers will receive modern and affordable homes under the Wadala housing project. He said the issues delaying the project have been resolved and the required FSI and permissions have been provided.
Fadnavis also announced the world-class redevelopment of the Vashi APMC Market Yard. Established nearly 50 years ago, the market will be redeveloped according to international standards, keeping future business growth and changing market requirements in mind.
The government will provide the required FSI above and below the ground. The modern market is expected to create more sustainable employment opportunities for Mathadi workers.
The Chief Minister said the government has begun the process of strengthening and restructuring all 36 Mathadi Boards in Maharashtra. An independent panel will audit their functioning to ensure greater transparency.
Pending issues related to workers’ wages, PF, gratuity, bonus, house rent and accident compensation will also be addressed on priority.
The issue of workers being made to carry loads exceeding 50 kilograms also came into focus during the event. Fadnavis praised the concerned departments for enforcing the rules, while Marketing Minister Jaykumar Rawal said strict action would be taken against violations.
Fadnavis stressed that the children of Mathadi workers should have opportunities beyond traditional labour work. He said special initiatives would be developed through the Annasaheb Patil Economic Backward Development Corporation and SARTHI to support higher education and skill development.
He expressed hope that the next generation of Mathadi families would become doctors, engineers, chartered accountants and government employees.
Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, Marketing and Tourism Minister Jaykumar Rawal, Narendra Patil and several legislators and office-bearers were present at the event, along with thousands of Mathadi workers.
The programme concluded with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis honouring meritorious workers with medals.
