A major gift to rural India: The Center has released ₹6,154.96 crore for Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, ensuring safe drinking water reaches every household
New Delhi: Giving new impetus to the goal of providing clean and safe drinking water to every household in rural areas, the Central Government has released a major financial package under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) 2.0. In the financial year 2026-27, the government has reimbursed ₹5,289.09 crore to 10 states, while releasing ₹865.87 crore to 13 states through the 'SNA Sparsh' digital platform. This is expected to accelerate the implementation of rural drinking water projects across the country.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, approved Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 on March 10, 2026. The mission's duration has been extended until December 2028. A massive budget of ₹8.69 lakh crore has been approved for this, of which the central government's share is ₹3.59 lakh crore.

Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 will now focus not only on providing pipelines and connections, but also on protecting water sources, water quality, operation and maintenance by gram panchayats, digital monitoring, and community participation.
The government is also implementing new reforms such as the Sujalam Bharat ID, geo-tagging on the PM Gati Shakti platform, water service assessment, and water delivery, which will increase transparency and accountability of the schemes.
Feedback is also being sought from MPs.
Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil is reviewing the mission's progress by meeting with MPs from various states. These meetings are discussing local issues, project progress, and future strategies.
The central government states that the objective of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 is not only to provide taps to every household, but also to ensure safe, adequate, and uninterrupted drinking water for every rural household for years to come.
