Shortage of Gas Cylinders Causes Distress; Demand Raised to Reduce VAT on PNG
Ranchi, April 18, 2026: During a meeting of the Petroleum and Explosives Sub-committee of the Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce, concerns were raised regarding the shortage of both domestic and commercial gas cylinders. With supplies disrupted during the wedding season, consumers, as well as hotel and banquet operators, are facing significant difficulties.
During the meeting, issues hindering the installation of PNG connections were highlighted, and a demand was put forth to reduce the 15% VAT rate currently applicable in Jharkhand—deemed excessively high—to bring it on par with the 5% rate prevailing in Bihar. Members argued that this high VAT rate places an additional burden on both consumers and traders.
Chamber office-bearers have urged the administration to streamline gas supplies and expedite the activation of PNG connections.
