Caste-based enumeration to be included in the 2027 census, government issues notification for the plan
New Delhi: “Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai” in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, stated that the government has notified the plan for conducting the 2027 census. He said that caste-based enumeration will be conducted in the second phase of the census.
The census in India is conducted in two phases. The first phase involves collecting information related to the housing status, assets, and amenities of households under the House Listing Operation (HLO), the questions for which have already been notified on January 22, 2026. The second phase will involve collecting demographic, socio-economic, and cultural information of each individual.
The minister stated that the questions for the second phase, including those related to caste, will be finalized and notified according to the prescribed procedure before the commencement of the census operation.
