Successful Treatment for Complex Biliary Diseases Now Possible in Ranchi; Patients to Get Relief from Major Surgery
Ranchi: Taking a significant step forward in enhancing healthcare services, Paras HEC Hospital, Ranchi, has achieved a milestone in the field of Gastroenterology by introducing the state-of-the-art 'SpyGlass' Endoscopy technology. With this new technique, precise treatment for complex stones and cancer in the bile duct will now be possible in Ranchi itself, offering patients relief from complicated surgeries and eliminating the need to travel outside the state for treatment.
Successful Treatment of Complex Stones
The first successful application of this technology was performed on December 23, 2025, on a patient whose bile duct contained stones too large to be removed by the usual ERCP procedure.
Dr. Brigadier Alok Chandra of the Gastroenterology Department stated that previously, such patients either had to undergo major surgery or travel to other states for treatment. He added, "Now, this facility is available to patients at Paras HEC Hospital." The patient was discharged from the hospital just two days after the successful procedure.
What is 'SpyGlass' Technology?
According to Dr. Chandra, under SpyGlass Endoscopy, a microscopic endoscope is inserted into the bile duct. To break the stones, Electrohydraulic Lithotripsy (a shock wave generator) is used, fragmenting the stones into smaller pieces and completely clearing the duct.
Also Helpful in Cancer Treatment
This technology will also prove to be a milestone in the treatment of bile duct cancer.
*Accurate Biopsy: Doctors can directly visualize the cancerous area and take precise biopsies from that site.
* Laser Stenting: If the duct is blocked due to a tumor, a pathway can be created using laser technology to perform stenting.
Dr. Nitesh Kumar, Facility Director of Paras Hospital, said that the hospital's goal is to continuously improve Gastroenterology and Endoscopy services so that patients in Jharkhand can access world-class facilities locally.
