TRAI begins review of interconnection rules to improve 4G, 5G, and satellite networks

New Delhi (M Bharat 24  News Live): To make India’s telecom services more transparent, efficient, and aligned with future technologies, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has started reviewing its existing interconnection regulations. The authority has released a consultation paper titled “Review of Existing TRAI Regulations on Interconnection Issues.”

The objective of this review is to integrate new technologies such as 4G, 5G, and satellite communication more effectively within the current telecom framework, ensuring smoother and better-quality services for consumers.

According to TRAI, the review aims to strengthen the interconnection framework both technically and practically, promoting seamless coordination among different service providers.

Interconnection regulations were first introduced in 1999 through “The Register of Interconnect Agreements Regulations,” followed by major revisions in 2018 and 2020.

The current review focuses on IP-based interconnection, 4G and 5G network expansion, and the integration of satellite-based communication services. It also includes an evaluation of interconnection charges, usage fees, and Reference Interconnect Offers (RIO) to make the system transparent, balanced, and technologically sound.

Earlier, on April 3, 2025, TRAI had released a preliminary consultation paper on the same subject. Based on the suggestions and analysis received, the detailed consultation paper has now been made public on TRAI’s official website.
