Nepal/Kathmandu: The fifth edition of the exercise 'Sagarmatha Maitri' between the armies of China and Nepal began in Kathmandu on Sunday. The ten-day exercise will focus on anti-terrorism operations, combat training and disaster management.
A 37-member military contingent of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) arrived here from Lhasa on September 5 to participate in the exercise. This year's exercise is a continuation of the exercise held in Chongqing, Sichuan province in China last year.
According to the Nepal Army, this series of military exercises between the two countries started in Kathmandu in 2017, after which this exercise is going on alternately in China and Nepal. However, this exercise could not be held in 2023 due to the Corona epidemic. The 'Sagarmatha Maitri' military exercise is a regular capacity building and experience sharing exercise and is not against any particular country.
The increasing military exercises between Nepal and China have drawn the attention of India, the US and Western countries, which are being seen in the context of China's wider Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Nepal also has similar military cooperation with the US, Japan and India under the 'Surya Kiran' series.
