Focus on the HIV & AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017 | National Lok Adalat on 13 December
Ranchi: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Ranchi, in collaboration with NSS, organized the third phase of a legal awareness programme at YBN University, Namkum. The session focused on legal rights under the HIV & AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017 for individuals living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Present on the occasion were LADC Chief Praveen Kumar Srivastava, Deputy Director of Jharkhand AIDS Control Society Dr. Debashish Chakravarty, CB Officer Dr. Sarita Das, law student Smriti Kumari, PLVs Prahlad Kumar Upadhyay, Lata Kumari, Preeti Kumari, Yudhishthir Mahato, Raja Verma and others.
Addressing the programme, Praveen Kumar Srivastava said that the 2017 Act aims to provide protection and safeguard the rights of HIV-affected and infected individuals. He highlighted the provisions related to non-discrimination, legal responsibilities, and formal grievance redressal mechanisms. Dr. Debashish Chakravarty emphasized that AIDS patients must not face discrimination and added that every HIV-affected person below 18 years has the right to reside in the household and access its facilities.
PLV Prahlad Upadhyay stressed the need for respectful behaviour towards AIDS patients instead of treating them with stigma. In the concluding session, PLVs conducted a door-to-door awareness drive, informing people about the free legal services offered by DLSA, Ranchi. Information regarding the upcoming National Lok Adalat on 13 December was also shared, where litigants can settle their cases free of cost through mediation.
PLV Lata Kumari highlighted NALSA’s victim compensation schemes, while Preeti Kumari focused on old age and widow pension schemes. PLV Yudhishthir Mahato provided details about the services available through the District Legal Services Authority, Ranchi.
