New Delhi: Shaheen Bagh police of South-East district has arrested Lalan Kumar, the main accused of the 2012 double murder, from Madhepura, Bihar. Lalan, a resident of Maura Jharkha village of Madhepura, Bihar, was absconding for the last 13 years and there was a reward of one lakh rupees on him. During this time, he kept hiding in different states to avoid arrest. He also kept distance from mobile phone and social media. After the arrest, he is being brought to Delhi on transit remand after being produced in the court of Bihar.
South-East District Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr. Hemant Tiwari said that on 31 July 2012, a case of kidnapping of driver Shamim and assistant Shere was registered in Pul Prahladpur area. Later, Shamim's body was recovered from Palwal in Haryana and Shere's body from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. The truck used in the incident was seized from Prayagraj. The accused involved in the crime, Sunil alias Rohit alias Tahniya and Shatrughan, had already been caught but the main accused Lalan Kumar absconded. The court declared him a fugitive on 10 December 2012.
The police claim that to catch the accused, the police travelled more than 20 thousand kilometers in three years. During this time, raids were conducted in seven states Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand. More than 500 call detail records were analyzed and more than 1000 people were questioned. Finally, Lalan Kumar was arrested from Shankarpur in Madhepura, Bihar on 4 September 2025.
