New Delhi: Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan (CP Radhakrishnan) has become the 15th Vice President of the country. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office and secrecy to him at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday. CP Radhakrishnan's journey to reach the post of Vice President is one of the inspiring journeys of public life. Birth Radhakrishnan was born on October 20, 1957 in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu. Radhakrishnan, who comes from the OBC community Kongu Vellalar (Goundar), completed his education from VO Chidambaram College and received a degree in Business Administration from here. He also has a keen interest in sports. He has been a college level tennis champion. Apart from this, he is also interested in cricket and running.
Association with RSS
CP Radhakrishnan joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at a very young age. He has been directly associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Jansangh for 48 years from 1973 at the age of 16. He became a member of the State Executive Committee of Bharatiya Jansangh in 1974.
Entry into politics
CP Radhakrishnan, who came into active politics through the Sangh, worked for a long time in the BJP organization. In the year 1996, he was appointed as the Secretary of BJP in Tamil Nadu. After this, he was elected to the Lok Sabha twice from Coimbatore in the years 1998 and 1999. However, he had to face defeat from the Coimbatore Lok Sabha seat three times in a row in the years 2004, 2014 and 2019.
19000 km long Rath Yatra
He was the President of Tamil Nadu State BJP from 2004 to 2007. During this, in 2007, he did a 19,000 km long Rath Yatra in 93 days on the issues of linking rivers, eradication of terrorism, implementation of Uniform Civil Code, eradication of untouchability and tackling the dangers of drugs. He was also in-charge of Kerala BJP from the year 2020 to 2022. He played an important role in the development of BJP in South India.
Served as Governor
Before being made a candidate for the post of Vice President, he was the Governor of Maharashtra. He was made the Governor of Maharashtra in July last year. Earlier, in February 2023, he was appointed the Governor of Jharkhand. While being the Governor of Jharkhand, he also took additional charge as the Governor of Telangana and the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. From the year 2016 to 2019, he was the Chairman of the All India Coir Board under the Ministry of Small, Cottage and Medium Enterprises (MSME).
