The ₹23,731 crore 'Gobardhan' scheme has been approved, providing a boost to clean energy and the rural economy in the country


New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the ₹23,731 crore National Recycled Bioenergy Scheme (Gobardhan). The scheme will be implemented from the financial year 2026-27 to 2035-36 and aims to increase compressed biogas (CBG) production in the country by approximately 10 times.


Under the scheme, agricultural residues, cow dung, sugarcane pressmud, municipal organic waste, and other biomass resources will be converted into clean fuel, organic fertilizer, and a source of rural income. The government aims to strengthen energy security by reducing dependence on imported fuels and making villages hubs of clean energy production.


Scheme Highlights


The scheme has a total outlay of ₹23,731 crore.


Period: 2026-27 to 2035-36.


Target to increase domestic CBD production by approximately 10 times.


New employment and income opportunities for farmers, cooperatives, and rural entrepreneurs.


Scientific waste management and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.


Six key components of the Gobardhan Yojana


1. Offtake mechanism for assured purchase of CBD.


2. Stable pricing, administered price of ₹2,110 per MMBTU.


3. Capital assistance to greenfield projects, maximum ₹2 crore per TPD capacity.


4. Expansion of pipeline infrastructure and connectivity to the gas network.


5. Credit guarantee for MSME-based projects.


6. Promotion of district-level projects through the CBD Ecosystem Challenge Fund.
