Information provided on legal action and punishment provisions under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006

Ranchi:  December 23, 2025: The District Legal Services Authority (DALSA), Ranchi, organized a significant legal awareness program as part of the 100-day action against child marriage and under the 'Asha Abhiyan' run by the Hon’ble NALSA. The event was held at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in the Angara block area, under the guidance of the Hon'ble Chairman-cum-Judicial Commissioner, Shri Anil Kumar Mishra-1, following the directions of Hon'ble JHALSA.

On this occasion, the key speaker, Dr. Anil Kumar Verma, appealed to the parents, stating that they must arrange their daughters' marriages only after they complete 18 years of age.

Child Marriage is a Punishable Offence

Dr. Verma gave detailed information to the attendees about the ‘Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006’. He clarified that according to this Act:

 * The minimum age for the marriage of a boy is fixed at 21 years.

 * The minimum age for the marriage of a girl is fixed at 18 years.

A marriage solemnized below these prescribed age limits is legally an offence.

Provisions for Punishment

Dr. Verma warned that under this Act, any person—be it parents, guardians, relatives, Panchayat members, priests, Maulvis, or anyone else—who performs, supports, or encourages a child marriage is considered a legal offender. Such individuals are liable to:

 * Imprisonment up to two years

 * A fine up to one lakh rupees

Focus on De-addiction as well

PLV Baby Sinha, present at the program, focused on the NALSA-operated scheme 'DAWN' while raising awareness among the youth. She stated that addiction harms not only the body and mind but also finances. She appealed to the youth to stay away from intoxicants and focus on securing their future.

The awareness program was attended by several dignitaries, including PLV Baby Sinha, Sunita Devi, Malti Kumari, Aghnu Bedia, Sheela Devi, and Dr. Anil Kumar Verma.
