CCL’s role in Jharkhand’s golden 25-year journey

A key partner in the state’s economic, social and environmental progress

Ranchi | 15 November 2025
As Jharkhand celebrates 25 years of its formation, Central Coalfields Limited stands out as one of the state’s most important contributors. Since 15 November 2000, the public sector enterprise has not only strengthened India’s energy security but has also left a deep imprint on Jharkhand’s development story.

A strong partner in Jharkhand’s progress

Situated at the heart of the state, CCL, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, is Jharkhand’s largest coal-producing company. The enterprise contributes significantly to the state exchequer every year. Yet its contribution extends beyond economics. Through extensive CSR initiatives, CCL has played a vital role in transforming education, healthcare, nutrition, sports, livelihood and environmental development in rural Jharkhand.

In the financial year 2024–25, CCL spent nearly Rs 80 crore on CSR activities, with 80 percent of the amount utilised within 25 kilometres of its operational areas and the rest across other parts of Jharkhand.

Transforming education

CCL considers youth as the true strength of the state. With this vision:

• A state-level library with a capacity of 5,000 seats is being built at Ranchi University campus at a cost of around Rs 65 crore.
• Under Project Digital Vidya, smart classrooms and computer labs have been set up in 193 government schools across eight districts.
• The well-known initiatives CCL ke Lal and CCL ki Ladli have enabled hundreds of economically weaker meritorious students to secure admission into IITs, NITs and other top institutions through free residential coaching.

Strengthening healthcare and nutrition

• A centralised kitchen is being established in Ramgarh with Akshaya Patra Foundation to serve midday meals to 50,000 children daily.
• Modular operation theatres at Hazaribagh Medical College are enabling thousands of patients to receive free surgical treatment.
• Through the Nikshay Mitra initiative, TB patients in Latehar and Chatra are receiving nutritional support and counselling.
• Health camps, nutrition kits and special elderly and women-focused programmes such as MACE have strengthened community health in multiple districts.

Empowering youth through sports and skills

• Through the Jharkhand State Sports Promotion Society at Khelgaon, CCL runs a sports academy offering free training, accommodation, education and nutrition to hundreds of cadets, most of them from SC, ST and backward communities.
• These cadets have won numerous national and international medals.
• CCL has also supported skill development in rural areas through CIPET training, loader operator courses, handloom and natural dyeing projects and e-rickshaw distribution.

Commitment to the environment

Environmental sustainability has remained a core priority for CCL.
• The company regularly undertakes dust suppression, water conservation, fish farming in mine voids and solid waste management.
• Nearly one crore saplings planted under CCL’s green initiative are helping revive the state’s greenery.

A vital wheel in Jharkhand’s growth story

As Jharkhand moves ahead with confidence on its development journey, CCL continues to serve as a strong pillar, contributing significantly to the state’s progress. The enterprise remains committed to supporting a prosperous, self-reliant and empowered Jharkhand.
