Tribals held a rally to protest the proposal to grant ST status to the Kurmi community

Jharkhand/Bokaro: The tribal community held a rally on Wednesday to protest the proposal to include the Kurmi community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.

Thousands of tribals from various areas of the district gathered at Birsa Munda Naya Mod Chowk and marched in a procession to the Deputy Commissioner's office. During the rally, the tribal community warned the government that no compromise on their culture, identity, and rights would be acceptable.

Tribal leaders stated that the Kurmi community's demand for ST status was an attack on their rights and existence. Women tribal leader Ambika Banskey said, "We have no enmity with the Kurmi community, but our worship, traditions, and language are different. Our connection with forests, trees, and stones is our identity. We will not allow it to be threatened."

A large number of tribal women and men from various areas, including Jaipal Nagar, Birsa Vasa, Gumla Nagar, and Bansgoda, participated in the rally.

The administration had made tight security arrangements during the protest. The Deputy Commissioner's office area was turned into a cantonment, and nearby shops were temporarily closed. The rally is part of the statewide Adivasi Aakrosh Maharally campaign, which began in Chaibasa on September 19th and will conclude in Ghatsila on October 25th.
