Successful hip transplant surgery of sickle cell anemia patient: Paras Hospital

Ranchi: Successful total hip transplant surgery of a sickle cell anemia patient was performed at Paras Hospital HEC, Ranchi under Jharkhand State Employees Health Insurance Scheme. A rare and complex case of the patient was successfully treated under the supervision of Dr. Avkash Kumar, Orthopedics Consultant of Paras Hospital.

In this regard, Dr. Avkash Kumar told that a patient suffering from sickle cell anemia came to Paras Hospital, whose hip joint was damaged due to AVN (Avascular Necrosis). Total hip transplant was done on that patient completely free of cost. After the surgery, the patient is now completely healthy and is able to walk.

Dr. Avkash Kumar told that sickle cell disease occurs mostly in the eastern region of India including Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Maharashtra. Sickle cell is a disease that affects young patients more. It is a genetic blood disorder in which the red blood cells in the body become crescent-shaped (sickle). These cells get destroyed quickly and make the blood deficient in oxygen, which can lead to fatigue, pain, swelling, infection, and organ damage. The treatment is mostly surgical. The surgery of this patient was a bit complicated as the patient had sickle cell anemia. The patient's blood was transfused four times. The patient is now completely fine. This case was also special because patients with sickle cell anemia can face many complications during the operation - such as blood clots, infections, and lack of oxygen. Despite this, the skilled medical team of Paras HEC accepted this challenge and gave a new life to the patient. Paras HEC Hospital listed under Jharkhand State Karmi Health Insurance Scheme

Manas Labh, Marketing Head, Paras Hospital HEC said that Paras HEC Hospital is one of the leading hospitals listed under Jharkhand State Karmi Health Insurance Scheme, where government employees and their dependents get advanced medical facilities at no cost. This operation is possibly considered to be the first successful total hip replacement under the Jharkhand State Employees Health Insurance Scheme.
