Scientists Deliberate on Tasar Silk Development at CTRTI Ranchi's Foundation Day
Ranchi: Dr. G. Punithavathi, Director of the Basic Tasar Silkworm Seed Organization (CSB-BTSSO), Bilaspur—under the Central Silk Board—participated in the 62nd Foundation Day celebrations of the Central Tasar Research and Training Institute (CTRTI), Ranchi. During the event, she held detailed discussions with the institute's scientists regarding the development of the Tasar silk sector and the application of new technologies.
Deliberations during the scientific session focused on making Tasar production more profitable, sustainable, and scientifically driven. Key topics included high-density plantation, intercropping, and disease management.
Scientists explained that adopting high-density plantation techniques allows for a greater number of Tasar host plants to be cultivated on less land, thereby increasing leaf production and farmers' income. Meanwhile, intercropping methods can serve as an additional source of income for farmers.
While discussing disease management, experts shared information on advanced scientific measures to prevent and control major diseases affecting Tasar silkworms. They noted that the use of disease-free seeds, hygienic rearing practices, and regular monitoring could significantly improve the quality and productivity of Tasar production.
On this occasion, several scientists, including Dr. Jayaprakash Pandey, reviewed the institute's various research activities. Emphasis was also placed on strengthening collaboration among different institutions to foster the holistic development of the Tasar sector.
Dr. G. Punithavathi stated that it is crucial to disseminate the new technologies and research achievements developed by CTRTI Ranchi to the farmers. This would strengthen Tasar-based livelihoods and create new employment opportunities in rural areas.
She added that such scientific dialogues serve as a vital medium for exchanging knowledge and experiences, paving the way for the sustainable development of the country's Tasar silk industry.
