Mobile Gaming and Depression: A Growing Challenge for Youth and children

In today's digital era, the mobile phone has ceased to be merely a means of communication; it has evolved into the primary medium for entertainment. Mobile gaming, in particular, has rapidly gained popularity among youth and adolescents. While playing games for a limited duration can serve as a source of entertainment and mental relief, an addiction to it is gradually becoming a cause of serious mental health issues—most notably, depression.

During mobile gaming, the brain releases a chemical called dopamine, which induces feelings of happiness and excitement. This is precisely why individuals feel compelled to play games repeatedly. However, when this habit spirals out of control, real-life activities—such as academics, work, social interactions, and family relationships—begin to take a backseat. Gradually, the individual begins to experience feelings of loneliness, stress, and dissatisfaction.

According to experts, the most significant impact of excessive gaming is on sleep patterns. Using mobile phones late into the night prevents individuals from getting adequate sleep, thereby exerting a negative effect on both the body and the mind. Consequently, issues such as irritability, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating begin to emerge. If this situation persists over a prolonged period, the individual may begin to feel mentally vulnerable, and symptoms of depression may start to manifest.

Furthermore, the pressure associated with winning and losing in online games also contributes to increased mental stress. Frequent losses often heighten feelings of anger and frustration, while the intense desire to win drives the individual to invest even more time in gaming. This creates a vicious cycle in which the individual becomes increasingly trapped.

The most crucial step in addressing this issue is establishing a sense of balance. It is not necessary to give up gaming entirely; however, setting specific time limits for it is essential. Limiting daily gaming sessions to a specific duration, ensuring adequate sleep, engaging in regular physical activity, and spending time with family and friends can prove highly beneficial in maintaining good mental health.

If an individual exhibits persistent symptoms such as sadness, loneliness, sleep disturbances, or a lack of interest in daily activities, these signs should not be ignored. In such a situation, seeking advice from an expert becomes essential.

Ultimately, it is crucial to understand that mobile gaming is merely a tool, not the center of one's life. If utilized in a balanced and controlled manner, it serves as an excellent medium for entertainment; however, excessive indulgence can pose a threat to mental health.
