“Senior citizens receive several benefits under the Welfare Act 2007” – Rajesh Kumar Sinha

Ranchi: As per the directions of JHALSA and under the guidance of the Principal District & Sessions Judge–cum–Chairman, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Ranchi, a legal awareness programme was organised today (17.11.2025) by DLSA Ranchi at Vriddha Ashram Apna Ghar, HEC Area, and Adarsh Ashram, Kulgu. The session was conducted under the supervision of DLSA Secretary, Ravi Kumar Bhaskar.

Deputy LADC Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Assistant LADC Pankaj Kumar Sharma, PLVs Sangeeta Singh, Rita Mahli, Raja Verma, along with other team members were present during the programme.

Focus on Maintenance & Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007

Addressing the elderly residents, Deputy LADC Rajesh Kumar Sinha highlighted various provisions, rights and protections available to senior citizens under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.

The DLSA team interacted with the residents, enquired about their health and listened to their issues to discuss possible solutions. Shri Sinha also briefed them about the services and functions of DLSA Ranchi.

Discussion on Facilities, Health & Support

Assistant LADC Pankaj Kumar Sharma discussed the availability of food, living conditions, medical support and other basic amenities in the ashrams. He informed the elderly that DLSA’s PLVs are posted at Sadar Hospital, Ranchi and RIMS, and senior citizens may contact them telephonically in case of any health need.

Key Benefits Explained under the Senior Citizen Act, 2007

The officers highlighted the following major provisions of the Act:

Legal Maintenance Responsibility: Children/relatives are legally bound to provide maintenance including food, clothing, shelter and medical care.

Fast & Affordable Disposal: Maintenance Tribunals at the district level ensure quick, simple and inexpensive resolution of claims.

Protection of Property: Safeguards for senior citizens who have transferred property on the condition of basic care.

Protection from Neglect & Abandonment: Legal remedies in cases of ill-treatment or desertion.

Establishment of Old-Age Homes: State governments encouraged to set up at least one old-age home per district.

90-Day Disposal Timeline: Maintenance cases generally resolved within 90 days.

Leaflet Distribution

At the end of the programme, DLSA PLVs distributed informational leaflets and pamphlets among the residents.
