35th National Mining Convention of DGMS inaugurated at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad

Jharkhand/Dhanbad (M Bharat 24 News Live): The 35th National Mining Engineers’ Convention and national seminar on the theme “Mining and Environment – Quo Vadis 2070” began on Friday at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, jointly organized by the Institution of Engineers (India).

The event was inaugurated by Director General of Mines Safety (DGMS) Ujjwal Taha as the chief guest, while IIT (ISM) Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra presided over the function. BCCL CMD Manoj Kumar Agarwal and Suraj Gupta of Birla Corporation graced the occasion as special guests.

In his address, Ujjwal Taha described mining as the “backbone of civilization” and emphasized that it must now evolve from being merely a production-driven activity to one that ensures environmental balance and sustainable development. He highlighted the need to promote safety, transparency, technology adoption, and women’s participation in the mining sector. Taha also informed that DGMS is transitioning from an inspection-based institution to a collaborative, online-enabled system.

On the first day of the convention, Prof. Khanindra Pathak of IIT Kharagpur and Niladri Ray, Director (Technical) of ECL and BCCL, were honored with the Eminent Mining Engineer Award, while Dr. Siddhartha Roy of CMPDI, Ranchi received the IEI Young Engineer Award.

The day began with a pre-centenary heritage tour of the Heritage Building and Oval Ground at IIT (ISM), featuring vintage Rolls Royce cars, symbolizing the 100-year legacy of mining education in India.

In the technical sessions, experts from NTPC, Tata Steel, and other organizations shared insights on new mining frontiers, regulatory reforms, and technological innovations.

The second day of the convention, on November 8, will feature sessions on Critical Minerals Exploration and Sustainable Mining Practices, concluding in the presence of NTPC Mining Limited CEO Naveen Jain.
