Supreme Court issues notice to Centre, Ladakh administration on Sonam Wangchuk's release plea

 

New Delhi (HS): A bench headed by Justice Arvind Kumar of the Supreme Court, hearing a petition seeking the release of Sonam Wangchuk, who is imprisoned under the National Security Act, issued notices to the Central Government, Ladakh Administration, and Rajasthan Government. The next hearing in the case will be held on October 13.

Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Geetanjali J. Angmo, has filed a petition challenging her husband's arrest. Geetanjali has demanded his release. She states in the petition that even after a week of Sonam Wangchuk's arrest, she has no information about his health.

During the hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Geetanjali, stated that the detention was wrong and that they oppose it. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Central Government, stated that a copy of the reasons for Sonam Wangchuk's arrest has been provided.

Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on September 26th. He is currently lodged in Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan.

Sonam Wangchuk was demanding full statehood for Ladakh. Four people were killed in the firing during the violence in Ladakh.
