Gadkari plans to use all solid waste in road construction

New Delhi: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said the government plans to use all the country's solid waste for road construction by 2027. Under this "Waste to Wealth" initiative, 8 million tons of waste has been identified and used in road projects so far. The initiative aims to protect the environment and build sustainable infrastructure.

Addressing the 120th annual session of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) here on Thursday, Gadkari said the government plans to use all the solid waste available in the country for road construction by the end of 2027. He said, "We are already segregating 8 million tons of waste and using it to build roads. Waste heaps are now becoming resources."

Speaking on alternative fuels, Gadkari said that India's automobile industry is rapidly growing due to innovations in biofuels, ethanol, hydrogen, methanol, biodiesel, LNG, and electric vehicles. India's automobile industry, which was worth ₹14 lakh crore in 2014, has now grown to ₹22 lakh crore. India now ranks third in this sector after the US and China. He expressed confidence that India can become a global leader in this sector within the next five years.

Gadkari noted that two-wheeler manufacturers such as Hero, Honda, Bajaj, and TVS are exporting 50 percent of their production capacity. He also urged agricultural and construction equipment manufacturers to adopt innovation and environmentally friendly technologies. He said that the country's annual petroleum, diesel, and gas import bill is ₹22 lakh crore, which can be reduced through alternative fuels. If ₹15 lakh crore of this import is saved, this money can be used to strengthen the country's economy.
